Some of the story points with the whole Ymir Forest. The music and graphics are good, particularly that it is a later game for SNES. Summoner, mage, healer, archer - all pretty typical stuff. Each character is very unique in gameplay, and the 2D nature of the game is definitely unique, althuogh a little clunky at times. The main character (Cless) is just another generic sword dude though. There is a LOT of backstory on him if you dig a little bit in the wiki. He even references this multiple times although it's never really dug into during the course of the game, and only a little bit at the end. The story is decent enough the big bad Dhaos is actually a relatively complex character vs "bad guy to destroy the world" type thing. And Dhaos.oh lordy, no wonder the main staff left to form tri-ace, he is bungled to the highest degree. I mostly got what the main cast was about, but not her. The Japon ninja clan in the forest with the elves felt like such a nothing at best, or a Wutai ripoff at the worst, and the game would be stronger without her. Those are exceedingly small in number however.Īlso, the PS1 character, the ninja girl, being playable, left me very divided. Some of them are neat and if I had solved them myself, I would feel quite accomplished. The other thing is the puzzles, some of which can be quite esoteric, which I am more divided on.

I say that partly because of the stupid number of mazes, which seem to be a holdover from the Tower of Druaga Namco days, which are the absolute worst and just exist to pad out the experience, maybe prevent rentals. There's some really good stuff here, but most of the good stuff is also cruelly implemented, to the point that I can't imagine, back during the SNES or PS1 era, someone being able to beat this game without a guide.
